In this unit, you will engage with contemporary media and communication theories. As communication is a fundamental element in any industry or context in society, you will explore ways we can think critically about the world around us in order to better understand it. - whether it is our jobs, politics, sports, or other socio-cultural phenomena. The various theories covered will focus on the different elements in the communications process, such as theories on the audience, medium, text, and more. These different foci will highlight distinct ways of interpreting any media environment.

Learning outcomes
- Identify and explain the range of social and professional contexts in which communication occurs;
- Critically analyse some of the major ways in which communication and media have been understood at a theoretical level;
- Critically evaluate the relation between theory and practice in the field of communication and how they can productively inform each other;
- Recognise communications and media studies as a basis for further graduate study and professional practice in the field.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
