Overview

In Introduction to Professional Writing, you will learn a range of genres in professional writing and respective conventions from campaign writing and basic journalism to business writing and so forth. You will first be taught the four main types of writing, but with particular focus on descriptive, expository/argumentative and reflective writing, and what they each entail before engaging the aforementioned genres. Issues involving ethics in, and effective, professional writing will also be covered in this unit. Classes will be conducted to simulate writing workshops during which you will have the opportunity to practice and discuss your writing. You will develop and demonstrate your professional writing skills individually and in collaborative groups.

Learning outcomes

  1. Recognise the four main types of writing and their specific functions, with particular focus on descriptive, expository/argumentative and reflective writing;
  2. Recognise and apply knowledge of professional writing genres and their respective conventions to produce professional-standard documents and communications;
  3. Analyse and apply ethical principles related to professional writing to produce professional standard documents and communications;
  4. Work in a team to demonstrate the ability to participate effectively in collaborative effort.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
