In this unit, students will explore the growing need for large-scale language data in identifying patterns and trends in language use across multimedia, multimodal, and multilingual contexts. Students will develop skills to understand and critically evaluate various types of language data and recent technologies, such as digital tools, machine translation, and generative AI. Students will also develop transferable skills for utilising and analysing language data, emphasizing methods in corpus linguistics, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative viewpoints and approaches, and contextualising findings in academic and professional contexts. Additionally, students will consider the importance of ethical considerations when employing such data and technologies.
