In this unit, you explore the complex relationship between media and audiences, users and consumers. You examine key qualitative methods for researching media audiences in order to analyse how audience experiences, agency, participation, power and influence have been theorised within media, communications and cultural studies. You will develop a critical and practical understanding of media audiences, including key theories, issues, methods and metrics for contemporary audience research.

Learning outcomes
- Identify and explain key concepts, issues and contexts relevant to understanding media audiences;
- Understand and evaluate different quantitative and qualitative methods for researchingcontemporary media audiences, users and consumers;
- Work independently and in teams to conduct original audience research and analyse results, drawing on relevant concepts and theoretical frameworks;
- Communicate research findings and insights in a clear, concise, accurate and engaging way using written, verbal and media elements.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
