Overview

This unit examines regulatory forces that shape the development and evolution of digital media. Looking in detail at major policy issues arising from digital media industries, the unit engages with important contemporary debates about internet access, user data, privacy, online content, business models and industry structures. Using global case studies, you will develop the skills necessary to understand the interplay between technology and policy, and gain the capacity to anticipate and evaluate future trends in the regulation of digital media.

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically analyse key policy issues, challenges and cases within digital media industries;
  2. Critically evaluate the regulatory, industry and community responses to digital technology and policy issues;
  3. Undertake original research into emerging digital technologies and associated regulation and policy contexts;
  4. Communicate research findings and insights in a clear, concise, accurate and engaging way using appropriate audio/visual elements and written reporting conventions.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
