Learning outcomes
- Identify the contexts in which medical and scientific texts are translated and the role of the translator therein;
- Analyse and compare linguistic features and genre conventions of medical and scientific texts in English and LOTE through parallel text research;
- Identify and discuss issues that medical and scientific texts pose for translation;
- Critically apply theoretical approaches and an analysis of the translation brief and purpose to formulate and justify translation solutions;
- Produce ‘fit for purpose’ translations of medical and scientific texts at a level of quality appropriate for their stage within the degree according to industry-specific standards.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
