This unit offers you a chance to engage with cutting-edge technologies in translation and multilingual communication. You will develop the skills necessary to work effectively with computer-assisted translation and machine translation tools in professional contexts. You will also be equipped with the expertise to critically assess the effectiveness of technologies for client needs and discuss the evolving role of the language professional in increasingly automated environments. The unit will include a core module on screen media translation and other multimodal translation, exploring real-world issues around language diversification, localisation and accessibility, whilst developing your hands-on technical skills to produce translated media products.

Learning outcomes
- identify challenges and opportunities in the application of translation technologies to authentic contexts based on contemporary industry practices;
- critically reflect on the role of CAT tools, machine translation and AI technologies, and discuss implications for the language services industry as a whole;
- analyse and assess the appropriateness of translation technologies for specific industry projects;
- apply practical and technical skills to effectively utilise translation technologies to produce a fit-for-purpose translation, and reflect on the processes and strategies involved;
- produce media products in which audio, visual and textual elements are coherently aligned and through which intercultural competence is demonstrated.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
