The unit introduces you to the legal and ethical rights and responsibilities of the media. You will examine how the law, ethics, economics, politics, technology and society impact the regulation and accountability of media and journalism. The principles of free speech, and its role in communications practice, are also examined. You will engage with a range of historical and contemporary perspectives and debates on journalism and the media.

Learning outcomes
- identify and analyse the legal rights and responsibilities, ethical dimensions, and the historical and political context of journalistic practice;
- evaluate major scholarly approaches to and debates about researching media organisations, practice and consumption in a social context;
- critically analyse and reflexively deploy the principles of 'the public right to know', 'freedom of expression' and 'access to information' in an international and cross-cultural context;
- communicate major scholarly debates in media and journalism studies in a range of formats and for a variety of audiences.
Workload
