This unit introduces you to a set of research and reporting approaches and techniques that enable in-depth investigation. The subject is designed to demonstrate a variety of practical research techniques, especially the use of public records and databases and the practice of data journalism. The unit also explores the relationship between investigative and news reporting to assist you to produce in-depth investigations of your own.

Learning outcomes
- Identify and analyse the role of investigative journalism in a democratic society and the concept of the 'public right to know';
- Develop your own ideas for investigative projects;
- Find, collect, analyse and visualise data from a wide range of sources;
- Employ a range of investigative research techniques, with particular focus on data journalism and interviewing;
- Utilise narrative and visualisation techniques appropriate to in-depth journalism.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
