As globalisation facilitates the increased contact of individuals with different linguistic and socio-cultural backgrounds across both online and offline spaces, there is a growing need to understand the relationship between language and culture. In this unit, you will acquire knowledge and skills to understand the linguistic and socio-cultural factors that shape complex intercultural communication events across a range of personal and professional contexts, and the tools to analyse the dynamics of power and inequality in intercultural encounters.. Key theories underpinning intercultural communication are explored, including language as social action and cultural identity. You will apply your own insights and experiences to case-studies from a wide range of linguistic varieties and cultural groups at various scales, and develop skills to address intercultural communication in your own personal and professional contexts.
