Evaluation plays a vital role in providing government ministers, public managers, policy advisers and other interested parties with quality information on the success or otherwise of specific programs. This unit introduces you to program evaluation techniques and how they can be used to generate quality information about program performance. The unit provides you with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively commission and conduct program evaluations. Topics include: identifying issues and formulating questions for effective program evaluation; assessing and monitoring program processes, program outcomes and program impact; alternative strategies for program evaluation; measurement issues; and techniques for data collection, data analysis and evaluation.

Learning outcomes
- Critically analyse the focus, scope and purpose of evaluation
- Scope and plan an evaluation study
- Develop and implement a suitable research design
- Utilise evaluation research to support evidence-based policy development.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
