ATS1052 · Global mobilities
2026 Handbook6 credit pointsLevel 1Intercultural Studies
Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
In this unit you will explore the role of mobilities – the movement of people, knowledge ideas and things (such as commodities) – in shaping the global world. Through close examination of examples such as the mobility of international students, tourists, workers and climate refugees, you will become familiar with the ways that different mobile actors experience the ‘global’, and the ways that increased mobilities sometimes highlight or even increase global inequality. You will consider whether physical and virtual mobilities have made place, or geography less relevant, or whether social, cultural, economic and political differences rooted in place remain salient to our understanding of the contemporary world.
