This unit will provide you with a wide-ranging introduction to the core geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, including great power competition; emerging and middle powers; competing regional and international organisations; democratic versus authoritarian states; liberal versus illiberal values; developmental and human security challenges; climate change; and migration and refugee flows. In this unit, you will learn through case-study materials, in-class group discussions and presentations from specialists in the area. Learning outcomes
- investigate the Indo-Pacific as a contested geopolitical territorial and maritime space;
- identify and contextualise the core conventional and human security challenges in the Indo-Pacific in the 21st century;
- apply the knowledge and literacy you have gained on Indo-Pacific regional organisations; bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral agreements and regional governance; flashpoints for conflict; and the perspectives of major regional actors, including Australia’s growing role in the region, and apply these skills to specific issues and problems;
- apply international relations theories and perspectives to the major challenges in the region, through critical written and oral engagement with scholarly analysis and case-study material.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
