In this unit you will develop knowledge, strategies and skills to interact in Japanese, in situations you are likely to encounter in Australia and Japan. You will establish a firm foundation of linguistic, sociolinguistic and sociocultural knowledge which you can creatively apply in a variety of situations.

Learning outcomes
- comprehend simple Japanese texts with hiragana, katakana and basic kanji characters;
- compose simple sentences, individually and collectively, using both handwriting and typing assisted by appropriate technological resources;
- communicate effectively in basic Japanese conversations, applying textbook grammar patterns and vocabulary, including simple greetings, self-introductions and everyday conversations;
- recognise and use hiragana and katakana characters, and approximately 60 fundamental kanji characters;
- demonstrate sensitivity to cultural diversity through self-reflection, comparisons and group discussions deepening cross-cultural understanding of Japanese in a global context.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
