ATS1191 is aimed at students with no previous experience of the Spanish language. It provides an integrated, innovative and communicatively oriented Spanish course which develops all-round competence in the basic structures of the language. In addition, students are introduced to key aspects of Spanish and Latin American cultures and societies.

Learning outcomes
- demonstrate basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills (and the corresponding appropriate vocabulary) to communicate effectively in Spanish in a limited range of situations and on a limited range of topics;
- recognise and use basic structures and sounds of Spanish;
- recognise and use when necessary a vocabulary of approximately 600 Spanish words;
- engage successfully in conversations and discussions in Spanish, about themselves, their family, friends, neighbourhood and country;
- accurately locate information in basic texts in Spanish of up to 500 words;
- identify and discuss key aspects of modern Spanish and Latin American culture and societies at a foundational level.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
