Overview

In this unit, you will examine the relationship between gender, identity, and power in society. You will explore current debates about gender, gender identities, and sexual identities in gender theory, everyday discourse, media and popular culture, and political spaces, and evaluate the ways that gender continues to be highly contested and regulated via social institutions and structures of power. Using theories and frameworks explored in the unit, you will also explore the idea of gender as a site of resistance, and identify new and emerging stories that provide alternative ways of performing gender and gendered identities beyond the sex/gender binary.
