Overview

In this unit you explore performance as a method of advocacy, mediation, and social/cultural transformation across the performing arts. Through a student-led, project-based, Community of Practice learning approach, you will learn key concepts that help you understand, analyse and creatively engage the relationship between performance and individual and collective agency, advocacy and activism. You will engage in both the study and making of performance as a tool for personal, institutional and community transformation.

Learning outcomes

  1. analyse key concepts and practices in contemporary performing arts studies, with a focus on agency, advocacy, and activism;
  2. critically evaluate how social movements, communities, and individual activists use the performing arts to seek political empowerment, dialogue and transformation in current and historical contexts;
  3. design and implement community performances and events that engage processes of agency, advocacy and activism to address local community and global issues (in collaboration with peers);
  4. reflect on the knowledge and skills developed through individual contributions and engagement with a community of practice.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
