Overview

In this unit, you will investigate how performances of identities, cultures and places help us understand relationships across intercultural contexts. In this unit, we will explore dynamics central to intercultural theatre and performance including indigenous knowledges and identities, intersectionality and power, and place and time. You'll learn by doing--creating performances that explore these dynamics in context. And you will collaborate with others to explore how we as social actors both negotiate and challenge intercultural dynamics through the arts.

Learning outcomes

1. analyse how key concepts in critical intercultural performance studies frame and shape the dynamics of relationships in intercultural contexts;
2. critically evaluate the role that performance plays in negotiating and challenging intercultural dynamics and processes;
3. learn collaboration and teamwork skills;
4. learn basic performance skills including staging, embodiment, and writing;
5. critically explain the development of a creative artefact, including creative choices and techniques and how they link to intercultural theories and concepts;
6. create original performance works that showcases the role and importance of performance in intercultural exchanges in a range of contexts.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
