In this unit, you will critically evaluate notions of representation of, with and by First Nations Australians. In the first module, you will explore the ways in which British and settler filmmakers represented First Nations Australians. This exploration will be undertaken with consideration of the social, economic, and cultural forces that have impacted these settler representations. In the second module, you will consider the emergence of collaborative film and television production in the 1970s amongst the cultural shifts including Aboriginal land rights and housing movements. In the third module, you will consider contemporary First Nations self-representation in a range of audio-visual texts amongst the changing face of First Nations self-determination, the High Court Mabo decision, The ABCs Indigenous Department and other institutional examples. You will examine feature, documentary and short film and television examples as well as contemporary and archival audio-visual texts.
