In this unit you will examine the main concepts, theories and controversies within the field of International Political Economy (IPE). You will learn about the contending approaches to international political economy and the scope of the sub-discipline. You will explore the major developments in the 20th and 21st-century political economy, such as the political and social consequences of economic globalisation in the 21st Century. Topics you will study include: trade, investment, financial systems, development, globalization, inequality, multinational corporations, and the distribution of wealth and power among countries.

Learning outcomes
- examine and assess the intersections between politics and the economy at the international level;
- apply IPE concepts to understand global trade, investment and monetary arrangements;
- compare and evaluate the structure and operation of important global economic organisations and institutions;
- research and analyse relevant IPE case studies;
- communicate and defend arguments in written formats (in relation to assessment) and oral formats (in relation to class activities).
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
