In this unit you will explore the social dynamics of young people’s lives in contemporary society, with a specific focus on social change and justice. We will tackle questions such as: What challenges do young people face in contemporary society as they transition towards ‘adulthood’? How do media and technologies shape how young people are understood, and how young people see themselves? What opportunities are there to improve young people's lives, and centre young people as agents of change in uncertain futures? Topics you will cover in this unit include: youth cultures and identities, justice-involvement, crime and victimisation, changing transitions to adulthood, media and internet engagement, citizenship and social change, work, and leisure.

Learning outcomes
- apply sociological and criminological concepts to analyse and compare social processes in different institutional, political, cultural and policy contexts that affect young people;
- evaluate the credibility of knowledge claims and information sources around young people’s lives and experiences, including media texts, policy documents, and research materials;
- apply major sociological and criminological perspectives to generate new knowledge and solutions to pressing real-world problems that affect young people;
- conduct independent research to gather and incorporate relevant primary and secondary sources to answer research questions;
- effectively communicate complex issues regarding youth, social change, and youth justice issues to a range of audiences, including in written and oral formats.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
