In this unit, you will explore how race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and disability are represented on screen and behind the camera in film, television, and streaming platforms. You will examine how the screen industries have contributed to our construction of these categories and how these constructions have changed over time. You will survey the history and evolving representations of diversity in screen media from the point of view of producers, audiences, and critics. Questions you will consider in this unit include: What does diversity mean to film and television audiences? How have screen industries responded to questions of diversity? How might screen diversity be improved?

Learning outcomes
- analyse and critique representations of diversity and understand the role these representations play in society;
- examine and explain how contemporary screen industries are responding to questions of diversity;
- assess the challenges and limitations to achieving greater diversity, and propose potential solutions to these challenges.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
