In this unit, you will explore the reporting techniques, production practices, resources, technologies and genres of digital storytelling, including video, audio, graphic and interactive formats. You will examine the research capacities and information sources available through the internet, most notably via social media channels. You will analyse the implications for journalists of different modes of audience engagement and editorial positioning, through the development of exciting digital storytelling practices. You will consider news, social media investigative practices, data journalism and interactive multimedia packages. Please be aware that access to certain technology/equipment will be required for this unit. Contact the unit coordinator for details.

Learning outcomes
- Recognise and critically evaluate the functionality of digital storytelling, both in reporting and production;
- Utilise a range of digital resources available for journalism research, particularly through social media channels;
- Critique the key usability factors that determine good digital design, the effective use of social media, data journalism, production and presentation;
- Research and report for digital storytelling and locate your output within the context of an evolving global medium;
- Produce a digital story using text, sound, video and images;
- Produce an interactive news project using Adobe products.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
