Overview

This unit introduces you to the economic history of the modern world. Employing recent insights from both history and economics, it examines major turning points, trends, and events in the development of the modern world. Upon completing this unit, you will be able to explain and describe the long-run pattern of development, leadership, and decline in the world economy since the industrial revolution; evaluate the role of culture, institutions, and the environment in such change; and apply the methods of historical and economic analysis to contemporary debates on the future of the world’s development.

Learning outcomes

  1. explain and analyse the main issues and debates in the field of economic history;
  2. explain and interpret the main contours of the development of the world economy;
  3. analyse the processes underpinning long-term economic and historical development;
  4. evaluate critically contrasting views about the determinants of long-run economic and societal change;
  5. effectively contextualise and analyse contemporary events in the global economy;
  6. identify and review the use of historical and economic analysis.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
