Overview

In this unit you will investigate the origins and impacts of discrimination, and strategies to combat it in politics and society. Grounded in political science theory and empirical evidence, you will analyse discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, and socioeconomic status. The unit emphasizes practical methodological skills, teaching you to critically evaluate and utilize rigorous empirical techniques—including, for example, audit studies, field experiments, conjoint analysis, or observational research—to investigate discriminatory practices. You will actively engage with contemporary scholarly literature, participate in inclusive discussions, and develop your ability to design original research projects.

Learning outcomes

  1. explain major theoretical frameworks regarding discrimination clearly and accurately;
  2. evaluate empirical research on discrimination effectively, interpreting findings and identifying strengths and weaknesses;
  3. apply appropriate experimental and observational research methods to discrimination research, demonstrated through hands-on assignments and collaborative activities;
  4. develop and clearly articulate original, testable hypotheses about discrimination.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period, comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
