In this unit you will comprehensively explore hate crime through criminological, sociological, psychological and political lenses. You will examine the causes, manifestations and impacts of hate. You will engage with theoretical frameworks, empirical research and legal debates that help explain why hate crime occurs, who is affected, and how society responds. Key topics in this unit include defining, conceptualising and measure hate crime, the utility of hate crime laws, consequences of victimisation and the political uses of hate.

Learning outcomes
- explain the difficulties in defining, conceptualising and measuring hate crime;
- assess the harms of hate crime on the individual and on the community;
- synthesise debates occurring during the development of responses to hate crime including laws protecting certain minority groups;
- critically evaluate the efficacy of current hate crime laws and sentencing processes;
- interpret research into hate crime and explain the importance of results and findings;
- communicate effectively in written and oral formats.
Workload
