Overview

In this unit, you are introduced to the dynamics of crime and justice policy-making in Australia and will consider the factors that influence the implementation of criminal justice policy in practice. You will learn how to develop, analyse and evaluate criminal justice policies and understand what lessons can be learnt from past policies and will gain an understanding of how public policy is developed. Focus will be placed on how criminal justice policy is influenced and shaped by politics, special interest groups and events.

Learning outcomes

  1. analyse relationships between research, policy and practice, including the role of the public sector, the private sector and non-government organisations in developing criminal justice policy;
  2. communicate policy-related matters in a range of formats;
  3. apply a range of skills within a team context, including collaboration, problem-solving, decision-making and communication;
  4. identify and communicate key obstacles to effective criminal justice policy making;

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
