The unit develops Indonesian linguistic and cultural proficiency through a focus on media, written genres and performative styles in which Indonesians give expression to issues of social concern. You will engage with the emotive and rhetorical dimensions of Indonesian language and culture in four areas: advocacy through cultural genres; first-person narrating by victims of social injustice; public languages of morality and decency, and; poetry. You will develop awareness of social problems in contemporary Indonesia. The ‘Knowing Indonesia Through Research’ requires research into a specific social problem, in which the student seek and draw upon Indonesian language materials.

Learning outcomes
- speak, listen, read and write in Indonesian to communicate effectively in a range of situations and on a range of themes;
- express ideas in fully-formed paragraphs of Indonesian showing mastery of Indonesian grammatical forms;
- interpret and orally describe the symbolic repertoires and linguistic aspects used by Indonesians when expressing social issues;
- communicate in Indonesian about a limited range of social problems confronted by contemporary Indonesians;
- communicate in semi-authentic situations with Indonesians living in Melbourne;
- complete a research project using sources in Indonesian.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
