This unit is the first part of a sequence progressing from the upper intermediate to the advanced levels of Japanese. In this unit, you will undertake various activities expanding listening, speaking, reading and writing and kanji skills using authentic materials, diverse speech-styles, and engaging with diverse academic and professional contexts. You will demonstrate independent and appropriate use of language as well as effective use of resources and digital technologies to advance language capabilities.

Learning outcomes
- understand a diversity of authentic materials and produce varied genres of texts, reading and writing both independently and with carefully used assistance of dictionaries and appropriate digital technologies;
- recognise and effectively use approximately 800 common kanji including familiarity with kanji frequently used in authentic materials and media;
- demonstrate advanced level proficiency in speaking and listening comprehension including unassisted competent culturally relevant communication with others about a variety of topics related to Japanese culture and society in global contexts using appropriate speech styles in both casual and spontaneous conversations and formal presentations;
- employ advanced research and critical thinking skills in analysis of aspects of Japanese culture and society based on finding, engaging and using relevant authentic materials in Japanese and digital technologies and effectively communicating research findings and processes orally and textually.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
