Overview

In this unit you will focus on the social impacts of pandemic threats to life and their implications for global health. You will explore the politics and ethics of effective responses to pandemics with specific reference to inequity. Topics include; historical overview of pandemics, media representations of pandemics, lived experiences of vulnerable individuals and communities, policy responses to pandemics, human rights-based approaches to pandemic threats, pandemic preparedness, and global cooperation. Through the immersive learning experience at Prato, you will interact with colleagues in workshops, field visits and dialogue with expert guest speakers. The unit will be of interest for students in sociology, anthropology, communications, international development, medicine, microbiology and public health.

  1. examine public representations and lived experiences of pandemic threats to life;
  2. demonstrate knowledge of pandemic inequities and how they may be addressed;
  3. discuss the implications of pandemics for effective and just global healthcare;
  4. apply unit concepts and relevant research literature to a pandemic case study;
  5. gain experience and skills working in a team on a shared project.

Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
