Melbourne has been home to successive waves of migrants since the city's founding in 1835. In this unit you will consider the ways in which migrant communities have established themselves in Melbourne and the cultures they have created as part of the evolving fabric of the city. Areas of culture to be examined may include food, writing, music or other areas. By examining migrant groups in comparison and in contact, you will develop cultural literary as well as your analytical and communication skills. The multidisciplinary unit will include an experiential learning component during which you will reflect on the theories of intercultural encounters introduced in the classroom.

Learning outcomes
- Apply a critical understanding of the application of concepts and approaches from diverse disciplines, including history, sociology, anthropology, performance, translation and gender studies;
- Apply elements of intercultural theory in the critical analysis of a variety of texts in order to understand how cultures are expressed, negotiated and intersect;
- communicate cultural expressions of their own and other groups in the context of a multicultural city;
- Utilise skills in research, critical writing and intercultural competence to communicate ideas.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
