Overview

Crime narratives (fiction, TV and film) are among the most popular and dynamic genres in Europe and beyond. This unit explores how crime genres interrogate important issues, including history and memory, gender, sexuality, identity, truth and justice, environmentalism, and transnationalism.

Learning outcomes

  1. describe the codes and conventions of the crime genre;
  2. critically examine the connection between the crime fiction genre and evolving historical, political, theoretical, legal and socio-cultural contexts;
  3. analyse and compare primary works of crime narratives (short stories, novels, films, TV series) from different cultural contexts in translation;
  4. research, develop and confidently communicate a critical argument through class discussion and written and visual work;

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
