The unit explores ideas of 'nation', 'nationality' and 'ethnicity' from the nineteenth century to recent times. It introduces a range of theoretical frameworks and approaches to the study of nationalism, with reference to appropriate case studies, to build your understanding of nationality, nation building, ethnicity and conflict. You will be expected to engage with the political, social and cultural histories of a number of nations in order to gain a deeper understanding of the complex issues related to the formation and maintenance of nation states and national identities throughout the modern era.

- Recognise the importance of debates and ideas about race, nationalism, ethnicity and conflict.
- Understand the importance of debate and discussion in the development of these ideas.
- Have sound oral and written communication skills and be able to utilise these in such debates.
- Understand the importance of critical analysis and be comfortable in challenging ideas and arguments.
