In this unit, you will complement your Japanese language learning by investigating everyday language use from a variety of analytical perspectives. You will examine examples from a range of sources and contexts to explore how Japanese is structured, used, and influenced by cognitive, social, and cultural factors. By observing and analysing actual language use, you will advance your language proficiency and your understanding of Japanese language and culture. You will approach language use through different lenses, which may include applied linguistics, discourse analysis, conversation analysis, interactional linguistics, corpus analysis, second language acquisition, and sociolinguistics. You will also conduct small research projects using different methods to examine and understand how language is used in daily interactions.

Learning outcomes
- observe and analyse Japanese language use;
- apply a range of theories and analytical methods to various aspects of Japanese communication, society and culture;
- relate observation and analysis of language practices to their own experiences and communication in Japanese;
- employ concepts and terminology used within different linguistic disciplines;
- design and implement an independent research project that includes: formulation of research questions, methodologies, data management and analysis.

Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
