Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
In this unit you will build on the research and critical thinking skills developed in your previous units in Global Asia to explore the research process in more detail. You will examine various research approaches used in Asian studies from specialists in various disciplines (such as anthropology, history, linguistics, cultural studies) and area studies (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, Southeast Asian, South Asian studies). You will carry out the initial steps of a research project, such as locating and defining research material, defining the scope of a project, commenting on its significance within existing scholarship and writing a literature review. You will also undertake the process of peer-review, which is crucial to all research in the humanities.
