Overview

In this unit you will explore the meaning and construction of sex and sexualities in everyday life. You will be introduced to a range of theories that have been instrumental in shaping understandings of sex and sexuality, and apply these to answer such questions as: What is the relationship between gender and sexuality? How are sex and sexualities regulated by different social institutions? How are sex and sexualities represented in contemporary life and what are the impacts of these representations? Topics you will cover include sex education, intimacy and sexual relationships, sex work, pornography and sexual health.

Learning outcomes

  1. apply a range of theories to analyse experiences and constructions of sex and sexuality in everyday life;
  2. identify and explain the diversity of sexual desires, practices and identities;
  3. critically discuss how gender differences shape perceptions and experiences of sex and sexualities;
  4. evaluate and assess how different social institutions reinforce and challenge ideas about sex and sexuality;
  5. communicate theoretical concepts clearly and effectively in written and audio-visual forms.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study.
