The unit involves a program of visits and/or project in collaboration with international organisations, carried out in-country overseas. The destination country is allocated by staff each year, and varies from developing nations to highly industrialised contexts. The unit begins online, where you delve into the history, politics and culture of the study-tour country, and gain an understanding of how the domestic and international news media operate in that context. You then attend an intensive workshop held at Monash University (Caulfield campus) to advance your skills in journalism practice, research and/or project management. You will then travel to the study-tour country, where you will carry out a program of visits and/or collaborative project.

Learning outcomes
- explain the historical, political and cultural context of the study-tour country and the role of the international organisations to be visited;
- discuss the complex 'ecology' of industries in which global correspondence occurs, in an era of global journalism;
- locate and make effective use of relevant scholarly literature in Journalism Studies;
- apply skills in journalism practice, research and/or project management, in direct observation of international organisations;
- collaborate constructively with fellow students in learning and discussion processes, including online forums;
- produce written work and oral presentations to deadline, making effective use of the conventions of professional journalism and/or scholarly presentation, including citations and bibliography where required;
- confidently approach and collaborate with international organisations.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
