Overview

In this unit you will explore some applied skills necessary for contemporary police practice such as reflective practice, communication, cultural awareness, interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, empathy, building an awareness of cognitive bias. Police are required to apply critical thinking and sound judgment to decision-making practices in changing and challenging social environments. Students will investigate the professional and leadership skills that contribute to being an effective police officer. The knowledge and skills gained from this unit will support students in their professional development, effective communication, leadership and professionalism within the police force and the community.

Learning outcomes

  1. understand the role of critical thinking in contemporary policing practice, and effectively apply critical thinking strategies to produce sound decisions and judgements;
  2. communicate effectively to a range of different audiences, applying communication techniques and strategies relevant in contemporary policing practice;
  3. apply the scholarship of professional policing practice to authentic policing challenges to generate professional insights;
  4. demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and relevant for contemporary policing practice.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 288 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study.
