In this capstone unit you will explore media, identity and power in a contemporary context, with a particular focus on issues of gender and race. You will build on your existing knowledge of communications and media studies to interrogate how media systems, texts, platforms, industries, and audiences produce, reproduce, and challenge social inequalities and power dynamics. You will evaluate and apply ethically informed research methods to investigate racialised and gendered media practices, developing advanced critical media literacy and research skills for professional and academic contexts.

Learning outcomes
- Identify and explain key contemporary challenges, problems and debates about gender and race within the media;
- Apply your prior knowledge of media studies methods and theories to contemporary critical issues relating to gender, race and media practices;
- Critically analyse contemporary issues in media practices, in the context of central theoretical concepts in the study of gender, race and the media;
- Evaluate appropriate methods for conducting ethically informed research into gender, race and media practices.
