Overview

This unit aims to develop your understanding and application of qualitative research in addressing contemporary business issues. Specifically, this unit provides you with a grounding in qualitative research philosophy, design and methods. This unit explores topics such as: paradigmatic approaches to research; research design; negotiation of access to research sites/participants; researcher ethics; methods of qualitative data collection such as observation, interviews, focus groups and non-intrusive data collection; methods of data analysis; issues of qualitative research validity; and qualitative writing. The knowledge and skills gained from this unit will enable you to undertake an independent research project which involves qualitative inquiry.

Learning outcomes

  1. explain key philosophical perspectives that underpin qualitative methodologies in business research
  2. assess and compare different qualitative data collection methods and their use
  3. design and conduct a qualitative research project ethically
  4. apply qualitative and reflective writing skills to communicate research insights effectively.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
