Overview

This unit provides an in-depth introduction to quantitative research methods which are foundational to business research. The methodological knowledge and skills developed from this unit will enable you to undertake an independent research project, which involves quantitative inquiry. Using real-life data sets, selected statistical tools and data visualisation packages, this unit prepares you to critically analyse and interpret evidence, construct reasoned arguments, and communicate data-driven solutions in solving business problems. Topics of this unit include survey studies/correlational field studies; forms of regression; analysis of variances; discriminant analysis; factor analysis; non-parametric statistics.

Learning outcomes

  1. integrate key concepts and frameworks in causal inference to formulate researchable questions and appropriate strategies for investigating relationships in business and social data
  2. critically assess the validity of empirical research designs by identifying underlying assumptions, potential biases, and methodological trade-offs
  3. produce a quantitative research paper with data sources, methodological approaches, and analytical techniques that adheres to scholarly conventions in structure, argumentation, and evidence-based reasoning
  4. communicate research processes and findings effectively through a range of scholarly and professional formats, demonstrating clarity, coherence, and audience awareness.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
