Overview

The unit focuses on demonstrating to you how economic concepts and empirical methods can be applied to key topics in health economics. You are exposed to teaching staff who are specialists in particular study areas (including international visiting scholars), which enhances your learning experience by adding motivation and research relevance. Embedding experts into the unit also exposes you to a wide range of perspectives and broadens your networks. Aims of the unit: (1) You are exposed to key research topics in health economics; (2) You are taught relevant fundamental economic concepts and empirical methods; (3) You learn how research is conducted in health economics. The skills developed in the unit are fundamental to undertaking economic research, and provide an ideal basis for successfully completing a PhD in Health Economics.

Learning outcomes

  1. understand relevant economic concepts and models for key health economics topics
  2. source and understand the relevant applied economics literature for key health economics topics including their strengths and limitations
  3. choose appropriate empirical methods to evaluate policy interventions
  4. analyse health economics policy options based on what we have learned so far from previous policy interventions
  5. evaluate critically and contextualise previous research

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
