This unit introduces core philosophical perspectives underlying scientific inquiry in a business research context. It examines different philosophies of research in the social sciences and explores their core epistemological and ontological assumptions, and their relationship with scientific knowledge generation. It considers the consequences of adopting these philosophies for the development of research questions, constructing arguments, writing literature reviews, and selecting and justifying research methods and analyses. It also discusses issues related to the responsible conduct of research.

Learning outcomes
- explain the multiple philosophical perspectives that underpin scientific inquiry in business research
- critically evaluate and synthesise research carried out under different philosophical perspectives
- understand the link between research philosophies, research questions and research methods
- explore the implications of different philosophies of research for the role and responsibilities of the researcher
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
