Overview

This unit constitutes the work preparation component to complete the Master of Biomedical and Health Science. It prepares you with the skill set for work and industry preparedness and provides you with a professional internship experience undertaken over two months. You will gain skills in developing an employment/work portfolio, including writing a CV and a cover letter, and addressing key selection criteria, for model jobs in the biomedical sciences. You will also learn the skills to develop effective online portfolios to market yourself professionally. You will also develop industry awareness for the biomedical and biotechnology industries. In the internship, you will acquire experience by working in a professional environment in the biomedical and biotechnology industries. The internship will include considerations of ethical issues in the workplace and the development of a workplace written report.

Learning outcomes

  1. Create a professional written portfolio for different types of positions within the biomedical or biotechnology industries.
  2. Evaluate explicit and implicit key selection criteria for different types of positions within the biomedical or biotechnology industries and formulate appropriate oral and written responses.
  3. Design and construct professional online portfolios to promote skills for self-employment in the biomedical and Biotech industries.
  4. Appraise and critique interview techniques for models of real world jobs in the biomedical or biotechnical industries.
  5. Apply professional biomedical science skills to generate a workplace -appropriate research report such as preparation of findings for publication or creating a pipeline of product marketing or evaluation.
  6. Appraise current trends in the biomedical and biotechnology sciences to Identify potential growth areas.
  7. Evaluate the impact of organisation culture upon ethical practise and approaches to problem solving.
  8. Formulate and apply a set of professional codes of conduct for a specific internship workplace.

Workload

For the coursework component: Contact 24 hours/week for four weeks. Internships: Maximum 7.5 h/day x 5 days/week x 2 months
