This unit covers both public and private aspects of international trade law. Topics include the law of the WTO (highlighting the non-discrimination principles and dispute settlement); rights and duties in international sales transactions; legal regimes governing contracts for carriage of goods internationally; distribution agreements; legal aspects of financing international trade; shipping documents, documentary collections and letters of credit; marine and aviation insurance; international commercial dispute settlement mechanisms (with an emphasis on international commercial arbitration).

Requisites
Learning outcomes
- define the purpose and scope of the international legal framework in which trade between nations takes place and advise on legal disputes arising in the WTO fora
- recognise and understand the form and nature of documents used in international trade including contracts of sale, shipping documentation, invoices, insurance policies, bills of exchange, documentary collections and letters of credit
- identify and understand legal issues in an international trade context
- determine the relevant rules of international trade law and apply them to disputes arising from international contracts of sale, international carriage of goods and finance of international trade in a variety of situations
- develop research, argument-formulating, writing and presentation skills.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
