Overview

This unit provides an introduction to the important areas of business law and company law. The topics include fundamentals of the Australian legal system, contract law and negligence, plus business structure types, characteristics of a company, directors' duties, and corporate insolvency.

Learning outcomes

1. demonstrate an understanding of key areas of contract, company and tort law relevant to business
2. demonstrate an understanding of common business structures and identify their differences and implications
3. identify the relevant legal risks, rights and responsibilities that emerge in different business contexts
4. apply knowledge of key aspects of business and company law to different factual scenarios in order to evaluate the legal outcomes that arise
5. critically evaluate how compliance with the laws covered in this unit interact with the activities, objectives and priorities of commercial entities.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
