Overview

In this unit, you will develop specialised knowledge of the haematological effects of cardiopulmonary bypass and the biophysical principles underlying patient management during cardiopulmonary bypass. You will explore a variety of testing modalities and transfusion decision-making frameworks, alongside patient blood management strategies to optimise patient outcomes. You will examine biophysical monitoring technologies including physiological monitoring modalities to justify real-time perfusion parameter adjustments that enhance patient safety. A strong focus will be placed on understanding complex haematological physiology and disorders, and how perfusion management is individualised for patients with specific haematological conditions or vulnerabilities. This patient-centred approach ensures you can adapt bypass conduct to each patient's unique physiology and clinical presentation.

Learning outcomes

  1. Examine normal versus pathological haematological physiology, including disorders and complications relevant to perfusion practice.
  2. Justify management strategies to mitigate the haematological effects of extracorporeal circulation throughout perioperative care.
  3. Analyse haematology and coagulation investigations to guide intraoperative decision-making and transfusion planning during cardiopulmonary bypass.
  4. Evaluate and justify biophysical monitoring modalities and parameter adjustments based on data interpretation to enhance patient safety during extracorporeal circulation.
  5. Evaluate current literature to inform an evidence-based approach to haematological management and biophysical monitoring during extracorporeal circulation.
  6. Communicate complex haematological and biophysical concepts and scientific content in a variety of formats.
