This unit develops your hands-on making skills and knowledge for the effective and intelligent use of materials and processes. It provides you with a chance to engage in different thematic investigations around traditional, contemporary, emerging and/or experimental materials and their related processes. You will be able to develop a unique perspective to your creative practice through experimental and cross-disciplinary approaches, alongside a mix of skill-based instructions and project-based learning. Project outcomes will take the form of both hand-made and machine-assisted artefacts of varying scales and applications.

Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate understanding of materials and processes related to the specific thematic focus;
- Apply a range of techniques and processes, including emerging technologies to develop your making skills through iterative experimentation;
- Integrate and communicate different perspectives, concepts and methodologies of your material making practice;
- Collaborate with others, reflecting on how shared decision-making shapes design processes, outcomes and ethical growth;
- Reflect on the broader impact of your making design practice across human and non-human contexts, considering ethics, equity and sustainability implications;
- Engage in reflective practice to evaluate personal learning progress, by critically responding to feedback, collaborating with others, identifying strategies for continued skill development and self-directed learning in design practice.
