Overview

The study of air motion in the Earth’s atmosphere that is associated with weather and climate in the midlatitudes and tropics. Topics to be studied include: the equation of motion; scale analysis and balanced flows; structure and stability of the atmosphere; circulation and vorticity; waves; the dynamics of midlatitude and tropical weather systems.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discuss the physical theory of the motion of the atmosphere and how it can be constructed from basic principles using mathematical analysis;
  2. Demonstrate skills in using mathematical techniques to understand the dynamics of the atmosphere;
  3. Demonstrate high-level knowledge of the important techniques and terminology in dynamical meteorology;
  4. Apply knowledge to analyse and solve problems in dynamical meteorology.

Workload

• Three hours of pre-class activities. These will be a mix of pre-recorded videos, activities and readings; • One 2-hour laboratory/support class and • Private study/research time per week.
