EAE4023 · Atmospheric modelling
2026 Handbook6 credit pointsLevel 4School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment
Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
The unit introduces you to the design of global atmospheric models as they are used in Numerical Weather Prediction, seasonal prediction and climate simulation. It provides a basic understanding of all aspects of global atmospheric modeling. It describes modelling techniques required to apply the fundamental equations that govern atmospheric flow in the settings of a modern General Circulation Model. It begins by reviewing the relevant equations and applying numerical techniques to their solution. It then covers the representation of key physical processes by means of parametrization. Finally, it covers techniques for evaluating the performance of models in representing key features of the climate.
